Kushinagar is the city where Buddha spoke his last
words and attained Moksha. It was in this very town
that he was cremated at a place called “Mukut
Bandhan” (liberation of attachment). Thus, this
place owes its importance in the Buddhist religion and
is visited by a number of Buddhist pilgrims throughout
the year. The city was excavated in 1861 by General
A. Cunningham and A.C.I. Carlyle, who established its
identity for the first time. This was followed by a
number of such archeological findings and excavations
that further certified its identity.
