In terms of history, there is a lot that lies within
the archaic architecture and simple locales. The city
sprang into prominence chiefly after the British overthrew
the reign of Nawab Saadat Ali Khan of Awadh under the
treaty of 1801. Kanpur became an important military
and industrial capital as European businessmen and traders
came pouring in. Kanpur has also been of strategic importance
during both the freedom struggles. In 1857, it was the
epicenter of the revolt since major freedom fighters
hailed from here.
Although struck by the resonance of the uprising, it
was only after the 1857 revolt that it started developing
as a major center and gained importance. Industries
such as those dealing in leather materials and cotton
textile Mills came into being followed by a number of
other similar industries. The city also played a vital
role in the final freedom struggle of India hailing
eminent luminaries of the struggle including Sardar
Bhagat Singh, Chandra Shekhar Azad, Nana Rao Peshwa,
etc. Kanpur also established its image as a literary
center of Indian classics and a hub for patrons of arts
and culture.
Today, Kanpur is known for its leather shoes and bags,
which are available at varied rates in different parts
of the country. Handloom and cotton textiles provided
in most malls are also a great buys.
