Mount.
Abu is a lush green oasis of dense forested hills in
the barren desert land of Rajasthan. It is located at
the southern tip of the Aravalli range and the hill
retreat owes its cool climate to the rich flora that
covers the entire hillside and includes coniferous trees
and a variety of flowering shrubs. The road leading
to Mount Abu is a curved one, characterized by the arid
region that is dotted with huge rocks in unusual shapes.
Being the only hill station in the entire state, Mount
Abu is more than just a summer retreat. Its spectacular
array of the exquisite Dilwara Jain Temples—dating
back to the 11th-13th centuries—make it a popular
pilgrimage centre. “Abu,” according to legend,
stands for the son of Himalaya, deriving its name from
Arbuada, the powerful serpent who rescued Nandi, the
sacred bull of Lord Shiva, from a chasm.
Mount Abu has been home to several sages and saints,
the most famous being Sage Vashishtha who is believed
to have created four Agnikula (born out of fire) Rajput
clans from a fire-pit by performing a “yagna,”
in order to protect the earth from demons.
Local sites and tourist attractions
Dilwara Jain Temple
These
beautifully carved temples were built between the 11th
and 13th century AD. Made out of elegantly carved marble,
these temples are dedicated to the Jain Tirthankaras.
The Vimal Vasahi temple is the oldest one, built in
1031 AD by Vimal Shah—a merchant and representative
of the Gujarat ruler.
A superb example of temple architecture, it has the
central shrine, which has an image of Rishabhdev, and
a large courtyard with 52 small shrines, each enclosing
a beautiful statue of the Tirthankaras.
Museum and Art Gallery
Set up in 1962, the museum is located at the Raj Bhawan
and houses a collection of archaeological excavations
dating back to 8th-12th century
AD. It also has Jain bronze carvings, brass ware, etc.
on display.
Gaumukh Temple
A natural spring flows through the marble sculpted
mouth of a cow, thus giving the shrine its name. It
is believed that Sage Vashishtha performed the famous
“yagna” right at this spot. A beautifully
sculpted hill temple of Arbuada, the mighty serpent,
stands against the beautiful backdrop. Also nearby is
the magnificent marble image of Nandi, the celestial
bull belonging to Lord Shiva that was rescued by Arbuada.
Adhar Devi Temple
The temple is chiseled out of a huge rock and approached
by a flight of 360 stairs. One of the most favorite
of tourist spots in the region.
