the look as well as the agriculture of the region. Permits
are required for to visit this area, which allow entry
till Hunder and Panamik. There are a number of army
check posts spread over the entire valley where you
will be required to furnish the permits.
Local sites and tourist attractions
Khardung La Pass
As
you leave Leh and move towards the Nubra valley, you
encounter an enchanting vision in the form of the Khardung
La pass, which is the highest motorable pass in the
world. It is located on the way to the valley and has
a breath taking view from the top. The pass is only
open for one way traffic and it is advisable to obtain
information on the timings and status before hand. Lying
at an elevation of 5602 m, this place is a must see
for all the visitors who come to Ladakh.
Deskit
Deskit
is the main village of the valley and a good place to
base your stay. The outskirts of the city are characterized
by dusky sand dunes whereas the interiors have a rugged
and authentic feel. The main bazaar is located in the
center of the city, where a number of local artifacts
can be purchased. The ancient Deskit gompa is located
near the market and is the oldest monastery of the Nubra
Valley. The exclusive Bactrian camels can be found here,
which are also available for rides during the day time.
Khalsar
Lying
at a lower elevation of 3018 m, is the Khalsar Village,
which is a quaint little place that beautifully personifies
the local culture of Ladakh. From the tourism perspective
it does not have much to offer except the local shops
and places to eat. At a short distance from the village,
one can get a spectacular and very close look at the
Shoyok and Nubra rivers.
Hunder
Located 7 km from the village of Deskit lies the striking
village of Hunder. Relatively smaller in size, its picturesque
value is relatively much greater. Lush trees, sprawling
streams, and soft sand dunes characterize the village.
A camel ride across the sand dunes of the village is
a cheap and wonderful way to get a glimpse of the rustic
beauty of the place.
Sumur
This village is characterized by long, well cultivated
fields at regular intervals and lush greenery exceeding
well into the interior lanes of the village. The most
popular feature of this village is the 150 year old
Samstemling Gompa, which is known for its large, articulately
designed complex and the seven temples contained within.
In 2003, the Dalai Lama visited this gompa during his
visit to Ladakh. The rooms that he occupied then are
well taken care of till today. The Thangkas and ancient
frescos outline the interiors of the dim prayer halls.
Facing the Samstemling Gompa is the Charasa, which
was the royal home of the ruling dynasty in the Nubra
Valley. Another gompa called the Tegar Gompa is located
toward the start of the lane leading to the Samstemling
Gompa. A small village called Panamik is located close
to Sumur and is hugely popular for its hot springs that
are known to have high medicinal value. |
