Lying in the southernmost region of the state, snuggled
amongst the Pir Panjal Mountains, the region of Jammu
is home to flourishing river valleys and forested mountain
regions. Locked between the extensive Himalayas and
the dusty landmark of Punjab, Jammu extends from Kishtawar
in the north-east to Akhnoor in the south-west. Rivers
like Ravi, Tawi, and Chenab meander within the plains
of the region, which is cut gracefully by the Shivalik
hills.
The region has a majority of Hindus with a small percentage
of Muslims toward the areas close to the Kashmir Valleys.
From a topographical perspective, Jammu is divided into
three different physical divisions, thereby affording
an extensive variety to the landscape of the district.
The main cities include Jammu, Kishtawar, Katra, Basohli,
Udhampur, Reasi, Rajouri, and Poonch—all lying
in different geographical landscapes. The largest city
of the region is the city of Jammu. Small villages speck
the entire district of Jammu carrying the local culture
and reverence of the place till this date. On the whole,
Jammu is safe to visit except in the regions lying close
to Kashmir. |
