GULMARG
Introduction

Lush green, sloping hills dotted with the most colorful wild flowers; that is what makes up the blossoming city of Gulmarg. Lying southwest of Srinagar, this hill station acquires an important significance within the Kashmir valley. On your way from Srinagar, when heading toward Gulmarg, you can witness the beautiful hillsides of Kashmir unfolding themselves in different hues. The name “Gulmarg” was given by Sultan Yusuf Shah in the 16th century. Since then, Gulmarg has been the abode of a number of great rulers. The great Mughal emperor Jehangir highly regarded the city and often resided within its verdant territories. The world’s highest golf course is also located within the hilly areas of this petite city.

Similar to most of the places within Kashmir, the city changes its form with every new season. During spring time it plays the role of a bountiful meadow streamlined with flowers, in summer it is the crowded hill-station speckled with visitors, and in the winter it becomes an important ski-resort.

Activities within the area

  • The Gulmarg Gondola Cable Car, presumably the highest in the world, is open throughout the year and affords an enthralling view of the mountains
